Why Astaxanthin Matters

Aging doesn't hit one part of your dog. It shows up everywhere at once.

Slowing Down

Older cells make energy less efficiently. Astaxanthin supports healthy mitochondria, the parts of each cell that turn food into energy.*

Stiff Mornings

EPA and DHA omega-3s from wild Alaskan salmon support healthy joints and easier movement.*

Foggy Moments

DHA and phosphatidylserine support memory, learning and focus in senior dogs.*

Dull Eyes & Coat

Lutein and astaxanthin support healthy eyes, and omega-3s support soft skin and a shiny coat.*

Pink

Wild salmon get their color from astaxanthin. Most fish oils for dogs don't add it.

What Researchers Saw in Dogs

Published studies on astaxanthin, the hero ingredient in PepPaws.

40%
Lower oxidative stress marker
Healthy beagles given astaxanthin for 6 weeks saw their blood malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress, drop from 1.5 to 0.9 µmol/L.
37%
Lower triglycerides
The same dogs' triglycerides fell from 37.2 to 23.6 mg/dL, with no change in the control group.
16 wk
Bigger gains in senior dogs
Young and senior beagles given astaxanthin made more cellular energy (ATP) than dogs without it, and the senior dogs improved the most.

Results from small peer-reviewed studies of astaxanthin in dogs (Murai et al., 2019; Park et al., 2012). They measured blood markers, not visible changes, and tested the ingredient, not PepPaws itself. See the full studies below.

Astaxanthin, Studied in Dogs

Plenty of dog supplements borrow research done on people or mice. These are peer-reviewed studies done in dogs, on the hero ingredient in PepPaws.

Dogs studiedYoung & senior beagles
Length16 weeks

Supported cellular energy, with the biggest gains in senior dogs

Researchers fed young and senior beagles either 20 mg of astaxanthin a day or none. After 16 weeks, the astaxanthin dogs showed more ATP (cellular energy), more mitochondria and higher mitochondrial enzyme activity in their white blood cells. The improvement was larger in the senior dogs. The authors concluded astaxanthin improved mitochondrial function, most likely by reducing oxidative damage to DNA and proteins.

Length16 weeks

Supported healthy immune response

Dogs were fed 0, 10 or 20 mg of astaxanthin daily for 16 weeks. Dogs on astaxanthin showed stronger immune-response markers in blood, plus lower markers of DNA damage and inflammation, compared with dogs that didn't get it. PepPaws gives 10 mg per 50 lb dog, the lower amount used in this study.

Dogs studied10 healthy beagles + 5 overweight dogs
Length6 to 8 weeks

Lowered a key oxidative stress marker by 40%

Healthy beagles got 0.3 mg of astaxanthin per kg of body weight each day. After 6 weeks, their blood malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative stress, fell from 1.5 to 0.9 µmol/L and their triglycerides fell from 37.2 to 23.6 mg/dL. Neither changed in the control group. No side effects were reported. PepPaws provides about 0.44 mg per kg.

Confirmed dogs absorb astaxanthin

A supplement only works if it gets into the body. This study gave dogs astaxanthin by mouth and measured it in their blood, showing dogs absorb it and carry it into their plasma and white blood cells, where the later studies saw their effects.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers!

What is astaxanthin, and why does my dog need it?

Astaxanthin is a natural antioxidant made by algae. It's what turns wild salmon pink. Studies in dogs found it supported cellular energy and a healthy immune response, with the biggest gains in senior dogs.* Most fish oils for dogs don't include it.

How is this different from regular fish oil?

Regular fish oil gives omega-3s. PepPaws gives the same wild salmon omega-3s plus astaxanthin, lutein, phosphatidylserine and natural vitamin E, so one pump covers joints, brain, eyes, heart, coat and healthy aging.*

How much do I give my dog?

One pump per 12.5 lb, on food, once a day.

Dog's weightPumps a day
Under 12 lb1 pump
13 to 25 lb2 pumps
26 to 50 lb4 pumps
51 lb and up6 pumps

Start with half the dose for the first 3 to 5 days.

How long does one bottle last?

Each 8 fl oz bottle holds about 157 pumps. That's about 5 weeks for a 26 to 50 lb dog, about 2.5 months for a 13 to 25 lb dog and about 3.5 weeks for dogs over 50 lb.

Is it safe for daily use?

Yes, it's made for daily use in adult and senior dogs, and the published astaxanthin dog studies didn't report side effects. Some dogs get a softer stool when starting any fish oil, which is why we suggest half the dose for the first few days.

My dog is on medication. Can they take PepPaws?

Ask your vet first, especially if your dog takes blood thinners or anti-inflammatories, is pregnant or nursing, or has surgery coming up. Fish oil can affect clotting at high doses.
